To get your business mentioned by ChatGPT, make your website state plainly what the business is, does and where, confirm those facts in structured data, answer the questions customers ask in the first sentence under each heading, and keep the facts consistent everywhere the business appears online. ChatGPT and the other assistants recommend businesses whose facts they can read, verify and quote. The seven changes below are the ones that move that needle, in the order to make them.

Why does ChatGPT mention some businesses and not others?

Because it can read some and not others. When ChatGPT answers a question like "recommend a dentist in Kandy" it searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer from what it found. A business gets named when its website makes three things easy: knowing what the business is, trusting that the facts are right, and lifting a sentence that answers the question.

Most business websites fail the first test. Their homepage says "Welcome to a new standard of care" and the assistant cannot tell if it is a dentist, a spa or a hospital. The rest of this post is about passing all three tests.

1. Put a plain definition in the first sentence of your about page

The about page is the page assistants read to identify the business. Its first sentence should be a definition, not a story: "Kandy Family Dental is a dental clinic in Kandy, Sri Lanka, offering general, cosmetic and children's dentistry since 2015." Name, type, place, what, since when.

Then use that exact sentence on the homepage meta description and in your Organization schema. An assistant that finds the same fact in three places treats it as reliable.

2. Add Organization schema with your contact details

Structured data is how a website confirms its facts in a form machines read without guessing. At minimum, every page should carry Organization schema with the business name, URL, logo, description (the sentence from step 1), founding date, contact email and phone, area served, and links to your social profiles under sameAs.

Test it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Invalid schema is ignored, so this is one place where close enough does not count.

3. Answer real questions, answer first

Assistants quote sentences. The sentence most likely to be quoted is the first one under a heading that matches the question being asked. So structure your service pages and FAQ as questions with direct answers:

  • "How much does a dental check-up cost?" followed by the price, then the detail
  • "Do you treat children?" followed by "Yes, from age three" then the detail
  • "Where is the clinic?" followed by the address and parking, then the detail

If the answer is in paragraph four after three paragraphs of context, it will not be quoted. Put it first, then explain.

4. Be specific: numbers, names, dates

"Fast, friendly, professional service" cannot be cited because it does not say anything. "Open six days a week, same-day emergency appointments, 15 minutes from Kandy railway station" can. Go through every page and replace each adjective with a fact where one exists. Where none exists, the adjective was not doing any work anyway.

This is the same discipline that makes copy better for people. Assistants just make the cost of vagueness visible.

5. Make the facts consistent everywhere

Assistants cross-check. If your website says you opened in 2015, your Google Business Profile says 2017 and your Facebook page has a different phone number, the assistant has three versions of the truth and picks none of them. Audit every place the business appears: website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, directories, and make the name, address, phone, hours and description identical.

This includes the exact spelling of the business name. "Kandy Family Dental", "Kandy Family Dental Clinic" and "KFD" look like three businesses to a machine.

6. Add an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of your business at the root of your site, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It states what the business is, lists the services and links to the key pages, in Markdown. A growing number of AI crawlers read it first, and it takes an hour to write. Keep it in sync with the site; a stale llms.txt is worse than none because it introduces an inconsistency.

7. Publish comparisons and lists

When people ask assistants for recommendations, the sources most often cited are comparison and list content: "Next.js versus WordPress", "what to look for in a dentist", "five questions to ask before a website build". If your business has a point of view on the choices your customers face, write it down as a comparison with a table. It is the content format assistants reach for, and most small business sites have none of it.

How long does it take to see results?

Weeks, not days. Assistants re-crawl on their own schedules and update what they know gradually. Make the changes, then check again after three to four weeks by asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers would ask. Compare the answers to what they said before.

If you want the before and after done for you, the AI visibility check is free: send your business name and website, and within two working days you get what each assistant says, what it gets wrong and what to fix.

What if you do not have time to do this yourself?

The seven steps are the core of our Generative Engine Optimization service, and the writing side of it is what content writing does. On a new build we do all of it inside the 2 to 5 day timeline. On an existing site we quote it after a look at what is there.

Either way, start with step 1. Rewriting one sentence on the about page is the highest-return hour in this whole list.
